BYSI worked with six local grass-roots youth basketball programs to get more funding and come together as a network that would work together to strengthen the youth development aspects of their programs. The six groups include:
These groups, headed up by longtime Boston residents, collectively serve over 500 of Boston’s youth annually, concentrating on the neighborhoods of Dorchester, Roxbury, Mission Hill, South Boston, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan and Hyde Park. The majority of the participants are boys and young men in the critical ages of 10-16; there is a small yet growing number of young women and girls also benefiting from FHN’s basketball as youth development programming.
The goals of the First Hoops Network collaboration are to strengthen its member organizations:
- programmatically, by improving and supporting academic and life skills programming that complements basketball skill development, and
- organizationally, by providing capacity building through technical support, connection to resources and sharing of best practices.
BYSI helped the groups get together and increase both individual and network capacity to improve the quality and scale of programs offered to kids. |
